In a Broken Dream

Boing boing published a picture of  pythons to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Snake which reminded me of this.

It still sounds good after all these years. I was surprised to find that Rod Stewart was the only currently-famous person on it. For some reason I'd convinced myself that either Jeff Beck or one of the famous bass players of the period was on it, but according to Wikipedia, it was just the band + Rod the Mod.  It was recorded by John Peel and went unreleased until 1970 though I don't remember hearing until '72, when it was re-released and became a temporary favorite.

Hi Sis

Can't remember it being a Peel number, but you mean you don't classify David Bentley's keyboards as being as important as Rod's vocals. I can't remember anything like that sound before "In a Broken Dream".

PS did I mention that the Pretty Things are touring at the moment!!!!

Hi Sis

I have been playing a lot of early Rolling Stones music lately and the R&B roots is mind blowing on tracks such as the original Midnight Rambler, you just can't resist "jigging"(I hope that isn't a rude word in the US) to the music.

No, I just mean, as I said, that Rod is the only currently famous person on it. I've never heard of David Bentley but I agree the keyboards are great - as is the guitar, which I had believe for a while to be Jeff Beck. It's a superb track by mostly-unknowns.

Jigging is fine. Usually the problem is the US *doesn't* recognize a rude word rather than vice versa. For instance 'shag' means...I don't know what it means, but it's not rude, and 'wank' means to concentrate a lot. The only exception that comes to mind is 'rubber' which doesn't mean 'eraser' in the US. It means Durex...except they don't really have Durex and anyway that would confuse the Aussies to whom it means Sellotape...or something. I give in.
